Some of the modern batsmen seem a bit weak against quality opposition and Mark Waugh didn't perform as his ability should have allowed him to.

Having said that, with Tribe and Pepper being punted off to the Lancashire League, maybe Bradman should have selected them.

So much for Perry saying he was the best strategy.

Although I think the 2001 and 06-07 team probably had better batting strength in teh reserves, but I wonder why Meuleman was not selected instead of Hamence.

I think the SRW/Ponting got to bash bad teams as well, with Wasim/Waqar/Donald/Pollock/WI all dropping off at the start of the century and the pace attacks declining.YellowMonkeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14344094370490912785noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7769253844592766659.post-55361739222237799802009-01-07T18:48:00.000-08:002009-01-07T18:48:00.000-08:00Added another error.Perry is quite hagiographical ...Added another error.

Perry is quite hagiographical about Bradman, saying that his 1936-37 and 1938 teams were one of the poorest in Australia and that showed what a great captain Bradman was. I doubt somehow that Bradman was one of the greatest strategists or the best fielder of his time, as Perry claims.YellowMonkeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14344094370490912785noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7769253844592766659.post-39929641823229519392009-01-04T23:16:00.000-08:002009-01-04T23:16:00.000-08:00Captain Australia is similarly error-strewn and fu...Captain Australia is similarly error-strewn and full of rather dubious extrapolation from either limited premises or seemingly made up from whole cloth. Perry makes shrewd choices of subjects but Phanto has his modus operandi down pat.

Agree with Phanto about the Invincibles. A magnificent effort by a team with many class players but they played mainly weakened opponents. The Australian teams of 1902, 2001 and even 2006/07 are all better teams. The 1902 team included Armstrong, Hill, Darling, Trumble and of course Trumper and played a very strong England team.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07450999702614548735noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7769253844592766659.post-49735264720002808282009-01-04T22:49:00.000-08:002009-01-04T22:49:00.000-08:00Another shocking thing is that Miller's niece laun...Another shocking thing is that Miller's niece launched this book!YellowMonkeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14344094370490912785noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7769253844592766659.post-55683061337151748422009-01-04T05:26:00.000-08:002009-01-04T05:26:00.000-08:00Ahhhh Perry, the Jeffrey Archer of cricket writing...Ahhhh Perry, the Jeffrey Archer of cricket writing. To my mind, it comes across that this man has never played the game and therefore has no feel for it, which is evident in his various jottings ... no work of wide scope or depth is without error, but Perry's various factual mistakes border on negiligence, while his opinions (or are they the Don's?) are curious. Together, they betray a man whose apparent modus operandi is to sit in front of a word processor, bang out a few words formed from a restricted knowledge base, and then indulge (requently) in cut and paste. Then there is his clairvoyant ability to channel Bradman from beyond the grave ... Don Tallon at #6 in an all time greatest XI, come on Rolly, give me a break! I have no further Perry mistakes to add to the above list, simply because I read the first half of his Warne biog, put it down, cursed the remainder bin from where I obtained it and swore never to read any of his books again. I do, however, submit two points for discussion:
(1) The '48 Invincibles have assumed the mantle of best team ever, but this is highly debatable, other candidates abound, including Aus 1902, 1921, Eng 1905, 1928-29, WI early 1980s, SAf 1969-70, Aus 2001. Is the deification of the '48 team part of the Bradman myth?
(2) Is Roland Perry a freemason????

PhantoAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7769253844592766659.post-69866636458447646282009-01-03T09:13:00.000-08:002009-01-03T09:13:00.000-08:00Very interesting stuff. To answer your question about Fingleton, I did read his book a long time ago and I would say that he wrote from memory and wasn't too concerned about facts or statistics.

That's a good blog. I think blogging is defintely a way forward for cricket writing.

All the best for 2009. Jack.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
